I teach at home in a dedicated music room on a beautiful Yamaha grand piano. Piano lessons are held on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays for both younger and older learners. You can make single or block bookings for 30, 45, 60 and 90 minute lessons over each term, with prices currently from £22 to £60.
The tools to succeed
For me, every pupil is different. They all have different needs and need different approaches. I teach various styles – classical, pop, showtunes, hip hop, even James Bond themes. This helps students discover what they love, broaden their awareness of music and find what they really want to do.
Each lesson is individually geared to develop the pupil’s strengths, improve their weaknesses and structure their practice.
I offer ABRSM exam preparation (practical and theory) and have successfully put over a hundred pupils through exams as well as several through diplomas.
Broadening your foundations
A student’s understanding of music should develop as their technical facility improves. Playing with others, learning to play by ear and improvising are all good ways to achieve this.
Singing helps with playing too. If you can sing what you want to play, your fingers are guided by your ears.
I take inspiration from the great teachers like Nadia Boulanger and the psychologist Carl Rogers, who found what pupils were interested in and tailored their education accordingly. Rogers’ theory of learning in Freedom To Learn has been a great influence.
If a student isn’t practicing enough, I feel it’s my job to get them wanting to practice more.
I have a fully enhanced DBS certificate and am registered on the DBS Update Service. Details available on request.
